Former rapper Luther Campbell receives coaching certification

Former 2 Live Crew rapper Luther Campbell is now free to be as defensive as he wants to be. Campbell's attorney, Mike Carney, said that Florida's Education Practices Commission met Friday in Tallahassee, Fla., and accepted a ruling from an administrative judge and certified Campbell, the defensive coordinator at Miami Northwestern High, to coach high school football in the state. The acceptance of the judge's ruling ends a long fight between Campbell and the Florida Department of Education over whether he should be allowed to coach high-schoolers. Campbell had been coaching the past three years using a temporary certificate.

"It was a big relief," Campbell told SI.com. "It's a beautiful thing."

Campbell will have to abide by several conditions set forth in Judge Robert Meale's order. He must take ethics classes, which Campbell said he has already completed. Campbell also must notify the Department of Education's investigative office within 30 days if he once again becomes involved in "the adult entertainment industry." The judge defined involvement in that industry for Campbell as a performance of a sexually explicit song or a club appearance that involved sexually explicit behavior. Campbell and his immediate supervisor also will have to sign a statement at the beginning of each school year certifying that Campbell has read the state's Principles of Professional Conduct. Campbell also must prove that he has made all required child support payments.

Campbell, who has run a youth football program in Miami's Liberty City neighborhood since the early '90s, began his high school coaching career at Miami Central in 2009. He moved to Miami Northwestern in 2011.
