OCEANPORT, N.J. (AP) Jockey Nik Juarez was sent to a hospital for observation after he was thrown from his mount during the eighth race at Monmouth Park on Sunday, just hours after he was honored as the track's top apprentice rider.

Track medical director Angelo Chinnici said Juarez bruised his right hip. The 21-year-old jockey was sent to the hospital for X-rays and further evaluation.

Juarez was aboard Forward Momentum when the horse appeared to clip heels with Valley King before the field entered the first term. Valley King's rider, Victor Santiago, also was unseated in the accident but appeared to be uninjured.

Juarez won 20 races this season at Monmouth Park to finish ninth in the overall standings.
