BALTIMORE (AP) Tom Chuckas has resigned as president and chief executive officer of the Maryland Jockey Club after a 6-year run.

Maryland racing stabilized after a period in which it appeared the Preakness might be forced to move from Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. Chuckas played a key role in eliminating the practice of bringing alcohol to the infield of the Preakness. The Preakness attracked a record-breaking crowd in 2014.

Chuckas says, ''Racing in Maryland is positioning itself for tremendous growth opportunities.''

The group that oversees Pimlico and Laurel Park is in negotiations with Chuckas regarding the transition of his responsibilities.
