American Pharoah was the prerace favorite, followed by Dortmund, Firing Line and Carpe Diem. Four horses were scratched from the race, cutting the field to 18.

American Pharoah will look continue the quest for the Triple Crown at the Preakness Stakes on May 16. Bob Baffert is the horse's trainer.

This is the second straight year that Espinoza was the jockey of the winning Kentucky Derby horse, as he rode California Chrome during the 2014 race.

No horse has won the Triple Crown since Affirmed in 1978. California Chrome also won the Preakness last year but finished fourth in the Belmont Stakes.
