Padres close to signing No. 3 overall pick Tate
The Padres and their No. 1 draft pick, outfielder Donavan Tate, are close to agreement on a deal. It is believed the deal is worth about $6 million.
Tate, who's been called a five-tool player, was the No. 3 pick overall in the June baseball draft.
Tate, a two-sport star from Georgia who was also signed to play football at the University of North Carolina, recently left practice at UNC, a sign he was getting closer to a baseball deal.
The deadline for drafted players to sign is midnight tonight.
