Mattingly to replace Torre at season's end

Don Mattingly will replace Joe Torre as manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers at season's end, SI.com has confirmed.

The news was first reported by the Los Angeles Times, which said there will be an official announcement before Friday's game between the Dodgers and Rockies in Los Angeles.

Mattingly, who has never managed, has been the Dodgers' hitting coach since midway through the 2008 season. He also spent four years on Torre's staff with the New York Yankees, three as the hitting coach from 2004-06 and one year as bench coach in 2007.

Torre took over the Dodgers before the 2008 season after a tremendous 12-year run with the Yankees from 1996-2007 in which he went to the postseason each year, won six American League pennants and four World Series titles. Torre guided the Dodgers to back-to-back NL West titles in his first two years in L.A. but the Dodgers have struggled this season and enter Friday's game with a 72-75 record. Torre, who turned 70 this past July, has also managed the Mets, Braves and Cardinals.
