The Diamondbacks have narrowed their search for a general manager to interim GM Jerry DiPoto and former Padres general manager Kevin Towers, according to a source.

DiPoto, 42, who was promoted from scouting director when GM Josh Byrnes was fired on July 1, helped his case by acquiring Daniel Hudson in the trade of Edwin Jackson and making other trade-deadline moves.

He is a former pitcher who played for the Indians, Mets and Rockies from 1993 to 2000 before moving into scouting for the Red Sox in 2003. He's been in the Diamondbacks organization since 2005.

Towers, 48, has a fine reputation after 14 seasons as the Padres GM. During his tenure, San Diego made the National League playoffs four times and advanced to the World Series in 1998. He was fired last season after Jeff Moorad became Padres CEO, and is now a special assistant to Yankees GM Brian Cashman.
