The Diamondbacks are talking with first baseman Xavier Nady, who is familiar with new GM Kevin Towers from their Padres days. Arizona already traded Mark Reynolds, and Adam LaRoche is a free agent, so they have a big hole at first to fill.

Andy Pettitte has told the Yankees he can still pitch, but the 38-year-old has been weakened by a groin injury and isn't sure he can get through all the necessary work to be effective.

The Red Sox have struck again, reaching agreement with Carl Crawford on a seven-year, $142 million contract. The deal, which includes a partial no-trade clause, is subject to Crawford passing a physical.

Crawford's deal is the largest ever for an outfielder and he's the first player without a 20-homer season to receive a $100 million contract.

The Rays have apparently traded shortstop Jason Bartlett to the Padres for a pair of young relievers -- right-hander Adam Russell and left-hander Cesar Ramos. The teams have yet to announce the deal.

The Rays will likely have Reid Brignac take over for at shortstop next season.

While the Yankees met with Carl Crawford, they and seemingly everyone else expects the Angels to win that derby. Crawford's asking price is unclear, but you can bet it will be somewhere "north of Werth."

Cliff Lee now knows where the Yankees stand: six years, $140-150 million.

The market is hot for Magglio Ordoñez, who is working out for teams today. The Tigers want him back but many others are interested in the outfielder, who will turn 37 next month. Ordoñez batted .303 for Detroit this season and had regained some of the power stroke he lost in 2009 but he suffered a season-ending broken ankle in July and wound up playing just 84 games.

The Cubs are looking for a starter and have called about Zack Greinke but it's more likely that they wind up with a mid-rotation guy.

Phillies in talks with relievers Dennys Reyes and George Sherrill.

The Yankees and Rangers are both interested in righthanded pitcher Mark Prior, the onetime phenom who hasn't pitched in the major leagues since 2006 because of repeated injuries. If the Yankees don't get Cliff Lee, their next pitching target would be Kerry Wood, who excelled for the Yankees as a set-up man to Mariano Rivera late last season after coming to New York in a trade with the Indians. It would be interesting if the Yankees signed both Prior and Wood, who were the co-aces of the Chicago Cubs staff when they advanced to the National League Championship Series in 2003.

Yankees are going to make a "very strong" six-year offer to Cliff Lee today that is expected to be for $23 to $25 million per year.

Paul Konerko getting a three-year, $37.5 million deal to stay with the White Sox.

Hearing that the Angels have "piles of cash" so don't count them out for anything.

St. Louis Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said by phone that his team is going on "radio silence" about money for slugger Albert Pujols, who will be a free-agent after next season. There is no word about talks for Pujols, who, it was reported earlier this offseason by SI.com, had been looking to repeat the 10-year, $275 million contract that the Yankees gave Alex Rodriguez after the 2007 season.

The Red Sox have an option to demote catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Free-agent Russell Martin could be an option for Boston which has had plenty of catcher movement this offseason already. Victor Martinez left the Red Sox to sign with the Tigers and Boston re-signed veteran Jason Varitek.
