A's sign Cahill to extension

The A's have signed Trevor Cahill, their opening day starter, to a multiyear contract extension.

Cahill, 23, broke through last season, going 18-8 with a 2.97 ERA as part of Oakland's impressive youth movement in the rotation along with Brett Anderson, Gio Gonzalez and Dallas Braden. He made the All-Star team for the first time.

Cahill is 1-0 with a 1.42 ERA and 15 strikeouts over 12 2/3 innings in two starts this year. His strikeout rate -- in a small sample size -- is strikingly higher than a year ago.

Cahill was set to make $440,000 this season.
