Indians manager Terry Francona says Masterson will definitely miss some time, but hopes Cleveland's No. 1 starter isn't out for the season. An MRI on Tuesday revealed the injury to the right-hander, who made his first All-Star team this season.
Masterson was pulled from Monday's game against Baltimore in the second inning because of soreness in his left side.
Masterson leads the Indians in wins and is tied for first in the AL with three shutouts. The right-hander is 14-10 with a 3.52 ERA in 29 starts. Cleveland is 3 1/2 games out of the second wild-card spot and has lost six of seven.
Royals recall Davis, Giavotella from minors
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- The Kansas City Royals have made a series of roster moves to bolster their bullpen and overall depth as they play for their first playoff appearance in nearly 30 years.
Kansas City cleared the necessary roster space by designating for assignment outfielder Edinson Rincon, who was at Double-A Northwest Arkansas. Left-hander Noel Arguelles was recalled from the same club and placed on the 60-day disabled list.
The Astros haven't said how long they expect Castro to be out. But his injury on Sunday left them with just one healthy catcher on the roster in Cody Clark.
Pagnozzi had played in 33 games in a career with stops in St. Louis, Colorado and Pittsburgh.
Houston transferred right-hander Edgar Gonzalez to the 60-day disabled list to make room for Pagnozzi on the roster.
