The Boston Red Sox placed outfielder Allen Craig on the disabled list Tuesday, reports Maureen Mullen.

Craig, who was acquired with pitcher Joe Kelly in the trade sending John Lackey to the St. Louis Cardinals, injured his left ankle running over first base last Friday in his first game with the Red Sox.

Craig is batting .237 with seven home runs and 44 RBI this season.

The Red Sox were active at the trade deadline beyond the Lackey deal. The team also traded lefty Jon Lester and outfielder Jonny Gomes to the Oakland Athletics for Yoennis Cespedes, traded shortstop Stephen Drew to the New York Yankees for Kelly Johnson and sent pitcher Jake Peavy to the San Francisco Giants for prospects.

Boston is currently in last place in the American League East at 49-62. The Red Sox open a series against the Cardinals on Tuesday in a rematch of last year's World Series.
