The Baltimore Orioles placed third baseman Manny Machado on the 15-day DL Thursday, retroactive to Aug. 12. Machado was diagnosed with a right knee sprain after injuring the knee during an at-bat in Monday's game against the New York Yankees.
Machado had offseason surgery to repair a ligament in his left knee, which caused him to miss the first month of the season.

The 22-year-old is batting .278 with 12 home runs this season. Last year, Machado was named to the AL All-Star team and won a Gold Glove while batting .283 and hitting 51 doubles, which led the American League.
Machado was the No. 3 pick overall in the 2010 MLB draft.
The Orioles called up second baseman Cord Phelps from AAA Norfolk to take Machado's roster spot.
