The Cardinals put veteran second baseman Mark Ellis on the disabled list with a left oblique strain on Tuesday, the team announced.

The 37-year-old has played only 65 games this season, batting .192 with no home runs and 12 RBI.

Because Ellis last played on Thursday, his disabled list trip is retroactive to Friday, meaning he will be eligible to return on Aug. 30. Manager Mike Matheny said he is "pretty optimistic" that Ellis will be able to return after the minimum stint, according to
