Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado will have knee surgery and will likely miss the rest of the season, reports Tim Brown of Yahoo Sports

Earlier Friday, Orioles manager Buck Showalter told reporters Machado would not be ready to come off the disabled list on Wednesday when he is eligible.

Could two pitchers win the MVP this year?

Machado has been on the disabled list with a right knee sprain since Aug. 13. He has been traveling with the team.

From CSN Baltimore:

Showalter says he may have a better idea of a timetable for Machado on Saturday.

“I’ll probably try to bring some clarity into that situation and gather what he’s being told as far as when baseball activity would start and all that stuff, I’ll try to clear that up for you, probably tomorrow, give you a more definitive idea,” he said.

In 82 games this season, Machado is batting .278 with 12 home runs and 32 RBI.

Machado missed the end of the 2013 season after injuring his left knee while running to first base.
