New York Yankees righthanded pitcher Masahiro Tanaka will start Sunday against the Toronto Blue Jays, manager Joe Girardi told reporters on Tuesday.

Girardi said Tanaka will likely throw between 70 and 75 pitches.

Tanaka has not pitched for the Yankees since July 8, when he sustained a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. Though he didn't need to have Tommy John surgery, Tanaka was expected to be out for six weeks.

Prior to his injury, Tanaka was 13-4 with an ERA of 2.51.

Entering Tuesday, the Yankees are in third in the AL East, and six games behind the Kansas City Royals for the second AL Wild Card spot.
