Kansas City Royals pitching prospect Kyle Zimmer may need to undergo surgery on his shoulder, according to a report from ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick.

Zimmer was shut down after re-aggravating his shoulder in a start earlier this month and feeling tightness.

Zimmer, who was also sidelined earlier this year with a strain in his latissimus dorsi muscle, has only started three games in 2014 with Pioneer League affiliate Idaho Falls. Last year he posted a 4.32 ERA with 140 strikeouts and 36 walks over 108 1/3 innings with Class A Advanced Wilmington and Class AA Northwest Arkansas.

The 6-foot-3, 215-pound righthander is the Royals' No. 2 prospect, according to MLB.com.
