Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz has been issued a one-game suspension and fined for making contact with an umpire during an argument, MLB announced Tuesday. He will appeal.

In the fifth inning of Sunday's game against the Baltimore Orioles, third base umpire Jerry Meals ruled Ortiz went around on a checked swing, making the count 1-2. When Ortiz protested, he was ejected by home plate umpire John Tumpane. Ortiz continued to argue with Tumpane and bumped up against him.

Ortiz will be allowed to play while the appeals process plays out.

Ortiz was replaced by Daniel Nava, who grounded out on the first pitch he saw. The Red Sox lost the game, 8-3.

Ortiz, 39, is batting .220 in 12 games this season, with two home runs and four RBIs. He has struck out 10 times in 50 plate appearances.
