Phillies ace Cole Hamels to skip a start

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Phillies ace Cole Hamels will miss at least one start because of a mild right hamstring strain.

Hamels is 5-5 with a 2.96 ERA. The three-time All-Star and 2008 World Series MVP is a valuable trade asset for rebuilding Philadelphia, which has the worst record in the majors.

Right-hander Phillippe Aumont will be called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to start Philadelphia's game against St. Louis on Friday night instead of Hamels. Aumont was converted to starter this season after struggling as a reliever since the Phillies acquired him from Seattle in the Cliff Lee trade of December 2009. He was 3-4 with a 2.35 ERA in 14 games, including 10 starts for the IronPigs.

The Phillies also designated righty Dustin McGowan for assignment before Thursday's game against Baltimore and recalled lefty Jake Diekman to take his spot.
