DeGrom leads Mets over Brewers 2-0 to stop 7-game skid

MILWAUKEE (AP) Jacob deGrom sent the New York Mets home with a rare road win.

DeGrom gave up four hits in eight innings and the Mets beat the Milwaukee Brewers 2-0 Thursday to stop a seven-game losing streak, their longest since April 2011.

''He's got tremendous stuff. He knows how to use it. He's legit,'' Mets manager Terry Collins said. ''He's not going through any sophomore slump. He's making the adjustments he has to make and making pitches. Outstanding game.''

DeGrom (8-5) struck out seven and walked none in the eighth straight start in which he has given up two earned runs or fewer.

''I try not to be too confident out there. I just try to get ahead with strike one and go from there,'' deGrom said. ''You get too cocky and you can get put back into place real quick.''

Wilmer Flores hit a go-ahead double in the sixth for the Mets (37-37), who avoided falling two games below .500 for the first time this year. New York completed a 1-7 trip during which it was outscored 31-11 and hit .177.

Jeurys Familia pitched a perfect ninth for his 20th save in 22 chances, and New York won for just the fourth time in its last 22 road games. The Mets are 26-11 at Citi Field but 11-26 away from home.

Collins was ejected in the fourth after Darrell Ceciliani was caught stealing at second. Collins ran onto the field and briefly argued with umpire Larry Vanover.

''I thought he was safe,'' Collins said. ''I went out to Larry and said I know I don't have any challenges left, but for heaven's sake, from my angle it wasn't even close at all.''

Milwaukee's Taylor Jungmann made his fourth big league start and held the Mets to four hits in five innings.

Center fielder Gerardo Parra threw out Michael Cuddyer at the plate when he tried to score from second base in the second inning on Kevin Plawecki's single to center, a call that stood after a video review that took more than four minutes.

Flores put the Mets ahead after Cuddyer's two-out single off Michael Blazek (4-2).

New York loaded the bases with one out in the seventh but managed only one run on an infield single by Lucas Duda that deflected off the foot of reliever Will Smith.

After Milwaukee's Adam Lind singled with two outs in the seventh, Shane Peterson hit what initially was ruled a ground-rule double down the left-field line. Umpires called for a review and ruled the ball foul and Peterson singled. DeGrom retired Jean Segura on a popout.

MATZ TIME

New York could be bringing up heralded pitching prospect Steven Matz, a 24-year-old left-hander who is 7-4 with a 2.19 ERA at Triple-A Las Vegas with 94 strikeouts in 90 1-3 innings this season. ''We'll talk about the rotation tomorrow,'' Collins said. When pressed as to whether he'd be inserting a new pitcher into the rotation, Collins said: ''It's very possible.''

GIMME SHELTER

A rain shower that began in the bottom of the second inning left some fans scrambling for cover. The stadium's retractable roof closed before the completion of the top of the third inning.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Mets: 2B Dilson Herrera returned to the starting lineup after being given Wednesday night off. The rookie, who returned from a broken finger on June 10, had been hitless in 16 straight at-bats before singling in the seventh.

Brewers: OF Carlos Gomez and 3B Aramis Ramirez didn't start so that they could ''rest their legs,'' Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell said. Gomez entered the game as a defensive replacement in the eighth.

Mets: Noah Syndergaard (2-4) starts Friday's homestand opener against Cincinnati. He is 0-2 with a 6.75 ERA in his last four starts.

Brewers: Kyle Lohse (3-9) starts Friday's series opener at home against Minnesota. Lohse is 0-5 with a 7.59 ERA in his last six starts and 0-1 with a 9.28 ERA in two career starts against the Twins.
