The Atlanta Braves defeated the Washington Nationals 2–1 on Thursday on a walk-off single by Cameron Maybin off starting pitcher Max Scherzer.

Scherzer pitched his third complete game in his last four starts, giving up two earned runs and five hits while striking out nine.

Maybin came up with one out in the ninth inning and Pedro Ciriaco on second base. He chopped a ball down the left field line that went over third baseman Yunel Escobar's head and was right on the line of being fair or foul when it crossed over third base. The play was not reviewable by umpires.

After the game, Scherzer talked about the ending.

"The way you lose like that—an infield single with Ciriaco being able to beat it out and then a ball that chops right over the third base—what are you going to get mad about?" Scherzer said afterwards. "I thought I executed my pitches in those situations. They just got hit. Baseball's a funny game sometimes."

Jason Grilli picked up the win for Atlanta.
