BOSTON (AP) Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia returned to the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a strained right hamstring after the same injury caused him to miss 16 games before the All-Star break.

The team also recalled right-hander Steven Wright before its game against Detroit.

Pedroia originally hurt himself rounding first after a go-ahead single against Baltimore on June 24. He was out of the lineup for Friday's 2-1, 11-inning win over the Tigers.

''Yesterday, him being down was because of some soreness,'' Red Sox manager John Farrell said. ''He went through an MRI this morning and while the injury or the strain to the hamstring doesn't show any enlargement, he's aggravated by the symptoms and feels like he needs a shutdown period to get back over this.''

Farrell didn't know of any ''singular event'' that caused the injury. He said it was probably just due to his time in action.

Pedroia is 1 for 22 in his last six games. The 2008 AL MVP is hitting .287 with nine homers and 34 RBIs.

The 31-year-old Pedroia didn't have any rehab games before returning in the first game after the break.

When he first went on the DL, Farrell called him the ''heart and soul of our team.''
