Anderson, Diamondbacks send Reds to 9th straight loss

CINCINNATI (AP) Earlier in the week, Chase Anderson thought he'd be pitching for Triple-A Reno on Sunday. Instead, he wound up looking like an ace for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Anderson threw shutout ball into the seventh inning and the Diamondbacks sent the Cincinnati Reds to their ninth straight loss, 4-0.

Anderson (6-5) was optioned to Triple-A Reno on Tuesday and recalled Thursday when Jeremy Hellickson was put on the disabled list.

Anderson allowed five hits, walking three and striking out two. He has pitched 13 2-3 scoreless innings in two starts against the Reds this season.

''When you have success against a team, you try to stick with what you did before,'' he said. ''I definitely had confidence today.''

Manager Chip Hale credited Anderson with returning to the form that helped him be 4-2 by the end of June.

''I just think he kept the ball down,'' Hale said. ''His stuff is good enough. I told him, `You were our best guy over the first couple of months. Let's get back to that.'''

Welington Castillo and David Peralta homered as the Diamondbacks completed their first four-game sweep this season. They climbed over .500 for the first time since they were 8-7 on April 22.

''I thought I'd get a beer shower or something for that,'' Hale said.

Relievers Addison Reed and Matt Reynolds finished the shutout. Reynolds, coming back from Tommy John surgery, made his first big league appearance since June 2013.

Raisel Iglesias struck out 13 in seven innings, the most by a Reds rookie since Gary Nolan fanned 15 Giants in 1967.

''I didn't know about the strikeout record,'' Iglesias said. ''I feel good with that achievement.''

Iglesias (3-5) allowed two runs - one earned - and three hits with three walks in seven innings.

''Unfortunately, we didn't get any offense,'' manager Bryan Price said. ''Pitchers get that `L' next to their name, but this game has to be played selflessly. What he did was set up the bullpen for (Monday).''

Castillo put Arizona ahead with a solo home run with two outs in the fourth. It was his 16th homer of the season and 14th since being acquired from Seattle in early June.

Castillo's line drive bounced out of the seats and back on to the field, prompting a 46-second crew chief review to make sure it was a home run.

Arizona capitalized on two errors on one play to make it 2-0 in the sixth. With Ender Inciarte on second, Paul Goldschmidt hit a chopper wide of first that Joey Votto caught backhanded, but his throw to Iglesias at first was low and literally booted by the pitcher for an error on the first baseman.

Inciarte rounded third, and Iglesias' throw to the plate sailed over catcher Brayan Pena's head for the second error.

Peralta added a two-out, two-run homer in the eighth.

The Reds got runners to first and second with one out in the fifth, but Goldschmidt, playing in at first anticipating a bunt by Iglesias, made a backhand stab of the pitcher's line drive and beat Ryan LaMarre back to the bag for an inning-ending double play.

PLANNING AHEAD

Hale had planned to rest Goldschmidt. Then Hale remembered that Goldschmidt's wife, Amy, is expected to give birth to the couple's first child any day now. Hale figured paternity leave will serve the dual purpose of giving Goldschmidt necessary time off. ''He's a good husband, and he's ready to be a father,'' Hale said before Sunday's game.

SAFEKEEPING

LaMarre got his first big league hit. Called up from Triple-A Louisville on Friday, the outfielder was 0 for 6 before singling to left in the fifth inning. ''I was happy to get the hit, but once it was over, it was about winning the game,'' he said. ''My family was really excited. I gave the ball to my dad and told him not to lose it.''

TRAINER'S ROOM

Diamondbacks: CF A.J. Pollock got the day off. He was 11 for 15 with a double, a home run, five runs and three RBIs in the first three games of the series.

Reds: Brennan Boesch was scratched from a start in right field because of a sore right ankle. He fouled a ball off it Saturday.

UP NEXT

Diamondbacks: LHP Robbie Day (3-9, 3.38) is set to start as the Diamondbacks go from facing the NL Central's last-place team to division-leading St. Louis in the opener of a four-game series at home.

Reds: What had been scheduled as a day off turned into the makeup of a game against Detroit postponed by rain from June 18. RHP Keyvius Sampson (2-2, 4.43), who wasn't with the Reds until July 30, is Cincinnati's scheduled starter.
