Morgan, Sweeney lead Phillies past Padres, 4-3

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Adam Morgan knows he needs more outings like Saturday night's to stay in the major leagues.

Morgan pitched six strong innings and drove in the eventual winning run, and Darnell Sweeney homered to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 4-3 victory over the San Diego Padres.

Morgan (5-4) recovered from the worst outing of his young career by surrendering six hits with three strikeouts and no walks. He gave up two runs, but neither was earned. Morgan, who debuted on June 21, allowed five runs - including four homers - in 3 2-3 innings on Monday in a 16-7 loss to the Mets.

''I want to stick here and by having outings like the one on Monday you're going to get out of here real quick,'' Morgan said.

The Phillies have won all five games against San Diego this season and 11 of 14.

Matt Kemp returned to the lineup for San Diego after missing two games due to a sore left shoulder and extended his streak of safely reaching base to 18 straight games with a sixth-inning single.

The Padres have lost five of six.

''We're inconsistent,'' Padres manager Pat Murphy said. ''We play good at times. We play tough against St. Louis and Pittsburgh, but this team plays very good against us.''

Ken Giles pitched a perfect ninth for his 11th save in 14 chances.

Fellow rookie Colin Rea (2-2) pitched into the sixth and was tagged for four runs and six hits with four strikeouts and two walks in his fourth major-league start.

''I thought my stuff was pretty good,'' Rea said. ''But I wasn't executing in some situations and they took advantage.''

Sweeney, acquired from the Dodgers on Aug. 19 for Chase Utley, hit a two-run shot to left in the second to put the Phillies up 2-0.

San Diego got some help from the Phillies while tying it in the fourth. Yonder Alonso and Melvin Upton Jr. had RBI singles in the inning, but both runs were unearned due to errors by shortstop Freddy Galvis and catcher Cameron Rupp.

Galvis redeemed himself with an RBI double, snapping an 0-for-15 skid, in the fifth to give Philadelphia a 3-2 lead before Morgan recorded his first career RBI with a single to center on an 0-2 pitch. The hit came after the Phillies pitcher looked bad while flailing away at an 0-1 offering.

Morgan said he looked ''hideous'' on the 0-1 pitch but quickly put it behind him.

''He made me look like a fool, but really it's a short memory up there,'' he said.

The Padres got a run back off Jerome Williams in the seventh on Jedd Gyorko's hit.

San Diego threatened in the eighth with runners on second and third with two outs, but Luis Garcia struck out pinch-hitter Cory Spangenberg to end the inning.

SLUMPING HERNANDEZ

Philadelphia INF Cesar Hernandez went 0 for 4 and has two hits in his last 21 at-bats.

''He's in a funk and needs to regain his confidence,'' Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said.

FINALLY, A SINGLE

Philadelphia's Aaron Altherr snapped his string of extra-base hits to start his career with a fifth-inning single. Altherr entered with four doubles, a triple and two homers and was trying to become the first player in the modern era to begin his career with eight extra-base hits.

NUMBERS MEN

Kemp's fifth-inning steal gave him 10 for the season, along with 15 homers and 78 RBIs. He joined Justin Upton (23 homers, 71 RBIs and 18 steals) as the first Padres teammates to record double-digits in the three categories since 1997, when Tony Gwynn, Ken Caminiti and Steve Finley did it.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Padres: 3B Yangervis Solarte was hit in the foot leading off the first. He walked slowly to first, favoring his foot, but stayed in the game.

Phillies: Rupp was drilled in the left hand in the second inning. He flexed his hand several times but remained in the game and said afterward his hand was fine.

Asher was one of the prospects acquired when Philadelphia traded LHP Cole Hamels to Texas. The Phillies optioned RHP Nefi Ogando to Triple-A Lehigh Valley after the game to make room for Asher.
