Report: Marlins offer Barry Bonds hitting coach job
The Miami Marlins have offered former MLB slugger Barry Bonds a position as a hitting coach and he tentatively plans to accept, reports Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
According an earlier report from Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, current hitting coach Frank Menechino is likely to remain in his position in 2016, while Bonds would simply be an addition to the staff if hired.
Bonds, who played for the Pittsburgh Pirates and San Francisco Giants across 22 MLB seasons, batted .298 with 762 home runs and 1,996 RBIs in his career. The seven-time National League MVP and 14-time All Star is the league’s all-time home run leader.
In July, the federal government ended its prosecution of Bonds, who had been convicted of obstruction of justice in 2011 for his testimony given before a grand jury in 2003. The grand jury was convened as part of an investigation into the BALCO steroids scandal. Bonds’s conviction was overturned in April and the U.S. Department of Justice filed notice in court in July that it would not challenge the reversal.

In three years of eligibility, Bonds has not been elected into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
Additionally, former Brewers pitcher and Red Sox pitching coach Jaun Nieves has been hired as the Marlins pitching coach.
The Marlins, who ended the season with a 71–91 record, ranked 29th in the league in runs scored.
