Report: Padres, shortstop Alexei Ramirez agree to one-year deal

Ramirez, 34, has played his entire career with the White Sox.

The San Diego Padres have signed free–agent shortstop Alexei Ramirez to a one–year contract, reports MLB Network's Jon Heyman.

Ramirez, 34, has played his entire career with the Chicago White Sox. Last year, he played in 154 games, batting .249 with 10 home runs and 62 RBIs.

Since he was called up to the White Sox in 2008, he has played in more than 130 games each season.

In his first year in the majors, Ramirez finished second in Rookie of the Year voting after batting .290 with 21 home runs and 77 RBIs. He has won the Silver Slugger award twice (2010 and 2014), and was named an All-Star in 2014.

The Padres were previously linked to 30-year-old shortstop Ian Desmond, also a free agent.
