Oakland A’s minor league pitcher Sean Murphy died Monday at age 27.

According to a team release, Murphy died unexpectedly. A 33rd-round draft pick in 2010, Murphy spent six seasons in the Oakland system and last played in 2014, after an elbow injury ended his 2015 season preemptively. He was suspended in February for the first 50 games of 2016 for a second positive drug test, for what MLB deems “drugs of abuse,” not performance enhancers.

The A’s are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Sean Murphy,” Athletics executive vice president Billy Beane said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.”
