Pirates pitcher Ryan Vogelsong was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with facial fractures.
The veteran righthander left Monday’s game against the Rockies after getting hit in the face by a pitch while batting in the bottom of the second.
Vogelsong stood in for an 0–2 pitch, and was hit by a Jordan Lyles fastball right near where the brim of the helmet meets the left earflap. He was down in pain but moving, then carted off the field. He was placed in a neck brace and taken to a nearby hospital in an ambulance.
Vogelsong’s wife tweeted Monday night that her husband “will be OK.”
I just wanted to say THANK YOU for the outpouring of love & prayers for Ryan. He is stable & will be ok. Pirates will update more tomorrow.— Nicole Vogelsong (@nicolevogelsong) May 24, 2016
The Pirates recalled righthander A.J. Schugel to take Vogelsong’s roster spot.
