Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Ryan Vogelsong underwent surgery Thursday to repair facial fractures that he sustained from being hit by a pitch, the team announced Thursday.

Vogelsong, 38, was evaluated for the injuries on Wednesday and then had the operation done at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.

Vogelsong was hit in the face by a fastball on May 23 while batting against Colorado Rockies pitcher Jordan Lyles. He had to be carted off the field after being hit.

The Pirates have not yet announced a timetable for his return.

Vogelsong is 1–1 with a 3.74 ERA in 12 appearances this season.
