The Cardinals have optioned second baseman Kolten Wong to Triple A Memphis, the team announced on Monday.

Wong, 25, has hit just .222 in 126 at bats for St. Louis so far this year, and was sent down in order to make room for infielder Jhonny Peralta, who will be activated from the disabled list on Tuesday.

Since his second call-up in 2014, Wong has not returned to the minor leagues. He is coming off a 2015 campaign in which he hit .262 with 11 home runs and 61 RBIs.

Wong came up big in the 2014 National League Championship Series for the Cardinals, going 5-for-18 with a pair of home runs, one of which gave St. Louis a walk-off win in Game 2.
