The Red Sox acquired Diamondbacks closer Brad Ziegler in a trade announced late Friday night.

Boston sent minor leaguers Jose Almonte and Luis Alejandro Basabe to Arizona in exchange.

The move helps bolster the Red Sox’ bullpen, as closer Craig Kimbrel was just placed on the disabled list and will miss 3–6 weeks after knee surgery, and setup man Junichi Tazawa has a sore shoulder. Manager John Farrell indicated to reporters Saturday that Koji Uehara is likely to close in the interim.

Ziegler, 36, has a 2.82 ERA and 1.46 WHIP this season, while converting 18 of 20 save opportunities for Arizona. The D-Backs are 38–50 entering Saturday and opted to cash in on the veteran reliever.

The Red Sox entered Saturday 47–38 and in the thick of the American League playoff race.
