White Sox ace Chris Sale has been suspended for five days after destroying the team’s throwback jerseys on Saturday, the team announced.
Amid a flurry of trade rumors, Sale was scratched from his scheduled start against the Tigers on Saturday due to what the team called a “clubhouse incident” at the time.
“Chris has been suspended for violating team rules,for insubordination and for destroying team equipment,” senior vice president and general manager Rick Hahn said in a statement on Sunday. “While we all appreciate Chris’s talent and passion, there is a correct way and an incorrect way to express concerns about team rules and organizational expectations.”
Sale was also fined an undisclosed amount. He will be suspended through Wednesday.
According to FanRag Sports’ Tommy Stokke, Sale was upset with the team’s choice to wear throwback jerseys, so he cut the jerseys up. Yahoo! Sports’ Jeff Passanconfirmed the report. According to Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, Sale and the other White Sox starters have had the option to pitch in whichever jersey they want this season.
Earlier Saturday, Jon Heyman of Today’s Knuckleballreported Chicago was asking for “five top prospects” in exchange for Sale. The Red Sox and Rangers have reportedly shown interest in the lefthander. Hahn told reporters Sunday that Sale has not asked to be traded.
Sale, 27, has posted a 14–3 record in 19 starts this season with a 3.18 ERA. He leads the league with three complete games and 133 innings pitched.
