In what was one of the wildest games of the year, the Cubs beat the Mariners 7–6 on a walk-off squeeze bunt by pitcher Jon Lester in the 12th inning.

After outfielder Jason Heyward led off the inning with a double, and moved to third on a flyout, Lester pinch-hit for reliever Hector Rondon, and on 0–2, laid down a textbook safety squeeze bunt.

Heyward rushed home, and dove in head first, getting underneath a late tag attempt from catcher Mike Zunino.

Chicago trailed 6–0 at one point, after a rough outing from starter Brian Matusz, but was able to cut it to 6–3 by the ninth. The team rallied for three runs to send the game to extra innings, capped off by a wild pitch from closer Steve Cishek.

Pitcher Travis Wood also pitched twice in the game, and made a great catch in leftfield.
