From start to finish, it was a day of firsts -- and some third -- for the Yankees’ Vernon Wells.

In the first inning of New York’s 3-2 victory over Colorado, Wells hit his first career home run at Coors Field, and in the ninth inning he played his first career inning at third base. Heck, it was his first career inning in the infield -- in the major or minor leagues.

Even more improbable were the circumstances that led to Wells’ last infield appearance back in high school: The stakes were higher Wednesday night, when Wells handled his one chance cleanly to help Mariano Rivera secure his 12th save of the season and 620th of his career.
