Without trying to determine the intention on the part of the pitchers, here's what happened in Tuesday night's Diamonbacks-Dodgers game:

Dodgers rightfielder Yasiel Puig was hit in the face by an Ian Kennedy fastball in the sixth inning. That came on a 1-2 count with one out and the bases empty and Arizona leading 2-0. Puig, as he did after appearing to pull up lame after a second-inning groundout, stayed in the game. Andre Ethier followed with a game-tying home run.

Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero, while leading off the next inning, was hit between the numbers by a Zack Greinke fastball on a 2-1 count. That resulted in the benches clearing but no actual fighting. Both teams were issued a warning by home plate umpire Clint Fagan. The Diamondbacks did not score in the inning.

Greinke himself was hit in the left shoulder by the first pitch he saw from Kennedy in the bottom of the seventh, a fastball headed straight for his head. Though Greinke reacted calmly, the benches emptied again, and this time the teams came out to fight. Here's the action starting with Kennedy's pitch to Greinke:

That mess resulted in the immediate ejection of Kennedy and his manager, Kirk Gibson, as well as the ejections of brawlers Puig, who can't seem to stay out of the news, Dodgers hitting coach Mark McGwire, and Diamondbacks assistant hitting coach Turner Ward (number 15 in the video above).
