After struggling with numbness in his pitching hand and an ineffective start to his 2013 season, Josh Beckett will undergo thoracic outlet surgery to relieve pressure on a compressed nerve in his neck according to the L.A. Times' Bill Shaikin. Beckett has been shut down since May 13.

Beckett pitched well when he arrived in Los Angeles last season with Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford and Nick Punto in a highly-publicized mega-deal with Boston, but he failed to recapture that form in 2013. Beckett will end the season 0-5 with a 5.19 ERA and eight home runs surrendered in eight starts. This is the second starting pitcher the Dodgers have lost to injury this season -- Chad Billingsley went down in April with elbow pain that required Tommy John surgery.

Though the Dodgers have healthy starters in Clayton Kershaw, Zack Greinke and Hyun-Jin Ryu, but have legitimate question marks at the back end of their starting rotation. The Dodgers are rumored to be in the running for Marlins' righty Ricky Nolasco, and could be aggressive buyers despite their slow start.
