Watch: Carlos Gomez continues his incredible 2013 with a game-saving, home-run denying catch
Carlos Gomez has always been known as a defense-first outfielder, mostly because his offensive output was just so awful. This year, he's brought his bat around, but he hasn't forgotten how to flash the leather, either, as that fun GIF up top proves. That's Gomez robbing the Reds' Joey Votto of a homer. And not just any homer: Votto's drive was a two-out, two-run blast-to-be in the top of the ninth off Brewers closer Francisco Rodriguez in a 4-3 game. Needless to say, Gomez's catch saved the game.
It's been that kind of year for Gomez, who was named to his first All-Star team thanks to his stellar first half. Though he went 0-4 against Cincinnati on Monday, his line still sits at .308/.349/.552, and he led all position players in Wins Above Replacement at 5.4, going into the night's action. He's also the league leader in triples with nine, one ahead of teammate Jean Segura and the Pirates' Starling Marte. With the stellar play of Gomez and Segura, you'd think the Brewers would be doing far better than they are. Not quite: Monday's win improved — if you can use that word — their record to 36-52, and they sit in the NL Central basement, 17.5 games behind St. Louis. You can't blame Gomez, though, who continued to show Monday night he's a deserving contender for the NL MVP award.
