Watch: Ross out at home after his hit had given Red Sox Game 5 lead

Game 5 of the World Series was tied 1-1 in the top of the seventh when, with one out, Boston's Xander Bogaerts singled for the second time in the game. Stephen Drew then walked, reaching base for the first time since his first at-bat of the Series, and David Ross hit a ground-rule double just inside the leftfield foul line to score Bogaerts with the go-ahead run.

With the lead in hand, Red Sox manager John Farrell let Jon Lester, who had retired eight in a row and thrown just 69 pitches through six innings, hit for himself. Lester made the second out of the inning, but Jacoby Ellsbury followed with a single to center that scored Drew to make it 4-2.

Ross tried to follow Drew home on Ellsbury's hit, but Cardinals centerfielder Shane Robinson threw home on the fly and catcher Yadier Molina was able to get the ball from the first-base side of the plate back to the third-base side in time to get Ross for the third out of the inning. There was some brief controversy about whether or not Molina got the tag on Ross. You can see in the GIF above that Molina doesn't touch Ross with his glove until he gets him in the belt buckle from underneath. However, an overhead view of the play showed clearly that Ross' right foot completely missed the plate and that he was indeed out.
