During an offseason probably spent trying to put dreadlocks in his beard and pitching Taco Bell on new ads roughly every hour ("But THIS TIME, I'm a cyborg ninja closer who can also turn invisible as I try to steal the XXL Chalupa. GOT HEEEEEM."), Brian Wilson apparently mastered the difficult yet seductive art of the knuckleball. Don't believe me? Check out the clip below from today's Dodgers-Mariners Cactus League game, which Wilson opened with a first-pitch knuckler that would've made Tim Wakefield proud.
[mlbvideo id="31432301" width="600" height="336" /] Up to now, most people believed that Wilson had spent the majority of 2012 and '13 rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. Instead, it's clear that Wilson was training in secret with Wakefield, R.A. Dickey and Phil Niekro to join the fraternal order of knuckleballers and carry the pitch into a new era of brilliance. That or Wilson just got super bored this offseason and started fiddling around with the pitch. They're both equally likely.
