After a month of replay reviews, baseball's full embrace of video technology finally produced its first exciting play of the season Tuesday.
Starling Marte stepped to the plate with two outs in the bottom of the ninth of a 1-1 game between the Pirates and Giants. Marte drove a 1-2 fastball from Tim Hudson deep to right field. Hunter Pence got himself in a precarious position too close to the wall, allowing it to carom past him and sending the speedy Marte hurtling around second base toward third.
When the relay from second baseman Ehire Adrianza got past Pablo Sandoval, Marte popped up from his head-first slide and bolted for home, only to be thrown out at the plate. Or so it seemed.
Marte appeared to pull his left hand back from the waiting glove of Buster Posey, allowing his right hand to get to the plate before Posey applied the tag to his chest. Clint Hurdle came out to challenge, and sure enough, Marte just barely got in safely.
The umpires overturned the original call and correctly ruled Marte safe giving the Pirates a 2-1 win
and the entire baseball-watching community a replay review worth remembering.
