Alves beats Hughes in UFC 85

MMAWeekly.com will bring you results and live play-by-play of Saturday's UFC 85 from the O2 Arena in London. After a revolving door of roster changes, the UFC settled on a solid main event between two-time welterweight champion Matt Hughes and American Top Team fighter Thiago Alves.

• Matt Hughes vs. Thiago Alves

R1 -- Alves defends the takedown early and Hughes actually pulls guard. Alves opens a cut on Hughes' face before standing the fight back up. Alves lands a nice knee to the body of Hughes, before giving up the takedown. Alves works his way back to his feet as Hughes goes for another takedown, but he is instead thrown to the ground. Alves finishes the round with some nice punches on the ground.

R2 -- Thiago starts the round with a nice knee strike, Hughes is forced to pull guard again. A large cut is opened on Hughes' face, as Alves starts to ground and pound. Hughes gets back up and Alves unloads a devastating flying left knee strike that puts Hughes on the mat for the last time.

• Michael Bisping vs. Jason Day

R1 -- Bisping comes out strong right away in the first round, going straight at Day, taking him down to the ground. Bisping postures up out of Day's guard, pounding him with punches. The fight gets back to the feet, before Bisping lands a nice double leg takedown on Day. Bisping takes Day's back and then starts to reign down shots as his opponent can only turtle up to defend. The referee has seen enough and stops the fight.

• Marcus Davis vs. Mike Swick

R1 -- Davis and Swick exchange early, with Swick throwing high kicks and Davis throwing punches. Swick takes the fight to the ground where he works a ground and pound attack, with Davis playing defense. Swick continues to work on his attack, Davis has a cut on the bridge of his nose.

R2 -- Swick gets the fight to the ground again early in the second where he starts his ground attack again. Marcus defends well, but cannot stand back up. Davis tries for a kimura, but Swick defends well and continues his attack. Back on the feet, Davis clinches with Swick and lands a few good uppercuts and a good takedown, but Swick almost locks on a triangle. Back on the feet, Davis throws a knee and Swick catches him and lands a good takedown to end the round.

R3 -- Davis comes out much more aggressive in this round, pushing the action trying to go for the knockout. Swick defends well. Back in the clinch, Swick throws nice knees, as Davis tries for the takedown, Swick grabs the cage and the referee halts the action and takes a point away from Swick. As the fight starts again, Swick gets another takedown and works for his ground and pound as the fight ends.

• Nate Marquardt vs. Thales Leites

R1 -- Marquardt and Leites trade early on, as Marquardt looks for body shots, Leites lands a big right hand that puts his opponent down. Leites follows up and mounts Marquardt and tries to finish, but Nate survives, pull half guard and eventually works back to the feet. Exchanging again on the feet, Marquardt unloads a big right uppercut that stuns Leites. Nate tries to follow up, but is unable to finish. Very close round.

R2 -- Marquardt comes out aggressive, landing a nice combination to start the round. Against the cage, Marquardt throws a big knee strike with Leites still having a knee on the ground. The fight is paused for the illegal strike. Referee Herb Dean takes a point away from Marquardt for the illegal knee. The fight continues, Marquardt comes out aggressive again, taking the fight back back down, punishing Leites relentlessly. The fight is stood back up and as Marquardt shoots for a takedown, Leites reverses and ends up mounting Nate, going for a choke and punches but the round ends.

R3 -- Leites goes for a flying knee, but Marquardt takes the fight down instead. Leites tries for a triangle choke, but Marquardt gets back on top and starts to work elbows. Referee Herb Dean sees an elbow strike to the back of the head, pauses the fight and takes another point away from Marquardt for an illegal strike to the back of the head. The fight is restarted, Marquardt gets the fight back to the ground where he opens another cut on Leites' head. Leites tries to get Marquardt down, but Nate explodes and actually piledrives Leites back down to the ground.

• Brandon Vera vs. Fabricio Werdum

R1 -- Werdum lands a good takedown to start the fight, but Vera perseveres and gets back to his feet. Vera lands a nice left hand that opens a small cut over Werdum's right eye. Werdum clinches and gets the fight back to the ground, where he passes Vera's guard very quickly and moves to full mount. Werdum starts unloading punches while Vera can only defend. The referee steps in to stop the fight.
