Six WEC 37 fighters hit with medical suspensions

The Nevada State Athletic Commission on Friday released medical suspensions issued to fighters following Wednesday's WEC 37 at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

First on the DQ list was co-main event fighter Manny Tapia, who suffered multiple facial lacerations in a TKO loss to current bantamweight champion Miguel Torres. Tapia will be suspended from competition until Jan. 18, 2009.

Former International Fight League bantamweight champ Wagnney Fabiano and top ranked Japanese fighter Akitoshi Tamura did not escape their bout unscathed. A contusion under Fabiano's left eye will keep him on the bench until Dec. 18, while multiple facial lacerations will suspend Tamura until Jan. 18, 2009.

On the whole, though, the event did not produce any major injuries.

Joseph Benavidez sustained a laceration to his lower lip that will keep him out until Dec. 18.

Johnny Hendricks will be required to get a retinal exam for an injury sustained in his fight with Justin Haskins. Hendricks is suspended until Dec. 18.

Cub Swanson injured his left hand in his bout with Hiroyuki Takaya and will be suspended until Jan. 3, 2009.
