What's next for Georges St. Pierre?

Georges St. Pierre is the prototype for the modern day mixed martial artist and a guy who has no visible weakness in the cage.

That was clearly evident on the night of UFC 94, which saw him dominate the current UFC Lightweight Champion B.J. Penn on his way to yet another welterweight title defense.

The dangerous Brazilian Thiago Alves is the next challenge that the UFC management has put in front of him as he continues his march towards the top of the MMA pound-for-pound list.

These two are set for war on July 11 at the historic UFC 100 event being held at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

This matchup between two well-rounded fighters has the makings to be one of the "Fight of the Year" candidates when it is all said and done.

"The fight is going to be high paced, and I'm ready to go for five five minute rounds of war," St. Pierre said.

Alves is a formidable test for the champion. He is a powerful and strong fighter who loves to stand with guys and slowly pick them apart using his world class Muay Thai.

"He (Alves) doesn't have much weaknesses. He's a very well-rounded guy. I'm going to try to expose his, I wouldn't say weaknesses, but I'm going to try to take him out of his comfort zone in the fight," St. Pierre said.

Getting Alves to the ground will be a key in this fight and a way to combat his striking skills.

St. Pierre is arguably the best wrestler in all of MMA and has taken down plenty of accomplished wrestlers including Matt Hughes and Josh Koscheck with relative ease in the past.

How does St. Pierre plan to attack the dangerous Alves?

"I think I beat him standing up," he said. "I think I can beat him on the mat too. I'm going to fight him in a way that nobody has fought him before. As far as my strategy it's like when you play cards. You don't want to show your hand."

Everyone will have to tune in the night of July 11 to find out his game plan and whether or not he will be successful in implementing it over the course of the fight.

If St. Pierre is fortunate enough to come away with a victory it sets up a potential super-fight with UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva, assuming he is also victorious against Forrest Griffin at UFC 101.

If everything falls into place, it would be a dream matchup that fans have been waiting to see for years and one that has also been teased by UFC President Dana White in the past as a realistic possibility.

It would certainly be great for all stakeholders including the fans, media, and the UFC and their bottom line.

It would also be an opportunity for St. Pierre to win a belt in another weight class in order to cement his legacy as one of the best mixed martial artists in the history of the sport.

Only legends B.J. Penn and Randy Couture have accomplished this rare feat in the history of the UFC.

Can we go ahead and tentatively schedule the mega matchup with Silva for late 2009 or early 2010?

"I don't know about it. For me right now my main focus is Thiago Alves," St. Pierre said. "It would be foolish to think that it would be me next (to fight Anderson). I don't want to look past Thiago Alves right now."

It may be a bit premature to discuss this potential blockbuster but it is certainly hard to ignore.

"My position is at welterweight but for a challenge I'm always accepting to new things," St. Pierre said.

If all goes well, it might be the "biggest fight ever" rhetoric begin on July 12.
