LAS VEGAS (AP) -- UFC heavyweight fighter Alistair Overeem has been charged with misdemeanor battery in Las Vegas after police say he shoved a woman in the face at a Las Vegas Strip casino.

A citation released by the Clark County District Attorney's office says the 31-year-old Overeem had been drinking when the incident happened early Jan. 2, just a few days after he knocked out Brock Lesnar in the first round at UFC 141.

The win means Overeem will fight for the heavyweight title this year.

The charges were first reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Overeem's lawyer, David Chesnoff, told the newspaper that Overeem maintains his innocence and plans to vigorously defend himself against the charges. Overeem was not arrested, but was summoned to court.
