MMA fighter Joao Carvalho passed away in the hospital after sustaining head injuries during a fight on Saturday night in Dublin, Ireland. He was 28.

The Portuguese fighter complained of feeling sick after he lost his match to Charlie Ward by a TKO.

Carvalho’s team confirmed the fighter’s passing on Facebook and said they were “deeply saddened and dismayed” by his death.

A statement from Total Extreme Fighting said it was determined Carvalho should be sent to the hospital after he was assessed by doctors during a fight stoppage. While in the hospital, Carvalho received emergency treatment and was later transferred to ICU that evening.

“We extend our most sincere condolences to the family of Joao Carvalho, and to his teammates in Team Nobrega,” TEF chief executive Cesar Silva said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with them. We'd also like to thank all sports fans for their concern and support.”

MMA fighter Conor McGregor spoke after the fight, suggesting that the fight should have been stopped earlier.
