Americans Abroad: Dempsey solid for Fulham, while Beasley moves on

With the qualifying rounds and draws of the major European competitions in the rear-view mirror, a number of Americans learned their UEFA Champions League or Europa League fates this past week.

Oguchi Onyewu and AC Milan were dealt the misfortune of having to battle Real Madrid and Ajax Amsterdam (and French underdog AJ Auxerre) in the group stage of the Champions League. Maurice Edu and Rangers drew perennial power Manchester United in addition to Valencia and Bursaspor, and Jermaine Jones and Schalke 04 landed in a tough group featuring Lyon, Benfica and Hapoel Tel-Aviv.

Unfortunately for SachaKljestan's Anderlecht, the Belgian side fell to Partizan Belgrade in their Champions League qualifying tie and dropped down to the Europa League. That's not as bad as it was for Aston Villa's American trio of Brad Friedel, Brad Guzan and Eric Lichaj, whose team yielded two late goals to Rapid Vienna to crash out of Europa League qualifying.

Jozy Altidore will be another American represented in the Europa League, though, after his Villarreal overwhelmed Dnepr-Mogliev in their two-legged tie.
