HENLEY, England (AP) -- Harvard's 'A' and 'B' crews, Washington and Brown all won second-round races in the coxed eights at Henley Regatta on Thursday, while Brown was easily beaten by the University of London `A' in the quarterfinals of coxed fours.

Harvard 'A' beat Newcastle University of England by 1 1/2 lengths and Harvard 'B' was clear of Southampton University by three lengths in the Temple Challenge Cup on day two of the famous regatta. Washington beat another English university, Reading, by 3 1/4 lengths and Brown won by four lengths over Michigan in their all-American race.

Brown's coxed fours missed out on the semifinals of the Prince Albert Cup when they went down to the London quartet, which triumphed easily. Harvard's four convincingly beat University of Birmingham to make the semis.

The women's coxed eight Radcliffe Crew from Harvard won their first-round race, powering home ahead of English club opposition by 2 1/2 lengths.

Stephen Whelpley and Willy Cowles won easily in the first round of the Double Sculls Challenge Cup and Potomac Boat Club of Washington went through against Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club in the club coxed eights in one of 78 races on the second of five days of rowing at Henley.
