Seminoles coach/CEO Bobby Bowden is a firm believer in delegation, so much so that he left the team's starting QB decision entirely up to new offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher. The choice for the No. 1 spot, incumbent starter Drew Weatherford, was "strictly [Fisher's] call," said Bowden. Now we'll get the chance to learn whether Weatherford's failure to become a star passer -- he's thrown 30 TDs against 29 picks in the past two seasons -- was because of the limitations of ex-coordinator Jeff Bowden's system, or just the norm.

Could the Gamecocks really lose their opener to Louisiana-Lafayette, which checks in at No. 110 in these rankings? It's doubtful, but they'll have to win without starting QB Blake Mitchell, who is suspended for the first game due to excessive absences from a summer-school English class. (This is not Mitchell's first issue: he received an identical one-game ban for an alleged bouncer-punching incident in 2006.) Redshirt freshman Chris Smelley, a four-star recruit out of Tuscaloosa, Ala., in 2005, will start in Mitchell's place.

The Beavers' offense was left with a gaping hole when it was announced last week that senior wideout Sammie Stroughter was leaving the squad indefinitely. Stroughter departed to mourn the deaths of two family members and a former coach, and wasn't expected to play at all in 2007 ... but then surprisingly materialized at practice on Aug. 25, wearing pads and participating in drills. Oregon State coach Mike Riley said on Monday that he was still not anticipating Stroughter seeing game action this season, "but I've been surprised already."
