Nets ready trade offer for Howard

Why wait until 2012? The New Jersey Nets are prepared to offer a trade package featuring Brook Lopez and two future first-round picks to acquire Dwight Howard before the Orlando Magic center becomes a free agent in July 2012, according to sources close to the situation. Sources told ESPN.com this week that, to sweeten the proposal, New Jersey would likewise offer to take back the contract of Magic forward Hedo Turkoglu, who has three seasons left on his contract worth just under $35 million. Absorbing Turkoglu's remaining salary would become financially feasible for the Nets after the expected release of swingman Travis Outlaw through the amnesty clause that will be included in the NBA's new collective bargaining agreement. Sapp: Vikes lack trust in coaches

The Vikings, who as of Wednesday were under the threat of their first blackout in more than a decade, are to the point of playing for pride and 2012 jobs. Perhaps the Vikings have little choice but to take the advice of the player who joined the roster 12 days ago -- veteran cornerback Benny Sapp, who played for the 2009 Vikings, who lost in the NFC championship game. "You just have to buy in," Sapp said. "That's one thing I feel as a team we lack a little bit, just buying in and believing in what the coaches are telling us to do and going out there and playing within ourselves and within the scheme and not have no out-of-body experiences and just play ball." Why Valentine's the anti-Tito

Perhaps allowing the pendulum to swing was part of the plan in Boston. When your team looks stagnant and complacent under a cool, calm and collected "player's manager," the way to attack the problem is by hiring his polar opposite. And so the Red Sox will replace Terry Francona, the man who stoically led Boston to two World Series titles in eight years -- after a franchise-defining 86-year drought, no less -- with former Mets manager Bobby Valentine, who is anything but stoic. ... [Valentine will] have to deal with a clubhouse full of players who took advantage of Francona, knowing he wouldn't call them out. Those days are over. Francona's polar opposite is on the way.
