Lions' Stafford a no-go for Sunday matchup?

There is good news and bad news coming out of Detroit. The good news: Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford was in a helmet and shoulder pads Wednesday. The bad news: He didn't take any reps with the offense during the early portion of practice open to the media. Stafford, who is fighting a sprained right ankle, stretched, jogged and did some light throwing. But Shaun Hill took most of the reps with the first offense. He and Drew Stanton alternated. "It feels OK," Stafford said after practice. "It's made progress since Sunday. Hopefully it will continue making progress." The Lions are calling Stafford's injury day to day, but you expect they will proceed with caution. After playing in Denver Sunday, the Lions have their bye week. (The Detroit News) Comment

Toronto interested in Boston's Ortiz

On the face of things, David Ortiz might make for a nice addition north of the border. Coming off an 81-81 season and with money to spend, the Toronto Blue Jays "will not rule out" making a strong push for [Ortiz]. ... Ortiz would be a lefty-hitting, middle-of-the-order complement to fellow slugger Jose Bautista, for whom he has come to have great respect over the past few seasons. He also has familiarity with Blue Jays manager John Farrell, the former Red Sox pitching coach whose input is valued greatly by general manager Alex Anthopoulos. And Ortiz typically has been productive at Rogers Centre, where he has launched 29 career homers, more than any ballpark except Fenway. (Boston Herald) Comment

Hawks' sale hits significant snag

What had shaped up as a rosy picture in Atlanta has clouded. The proposed sale of the Hawks to Los Angeles businessman Alex Meruelo has hit a significant snag in the NBA approval process, according to people familiar with the situation. It is not clear at this point whether the deal will be completed. Although Meruelo signed what he called a "definitive" agreement in early August to buy a majority stake in the Hawks from current owner Atlanta Spirit Group, the deal was contingent on the approval of the NBA Board of Governors. That has not been obtained as the league, as part of an extensive approval process, seeks financial assurances that Meruelo can fund the team's ongoing operations.
