The Yankees were on the verge of bringing Nick Johnson back to the Bronx Thursday night on a one-year contract worth about $5.5 million, a move that could mean the end of Johnny Damon's time in pinstripes. Barring a late-night change of heart by Damon to take a deal on the Yankees' terms -- something in the two-year, $18 million range -- it appeared that the outfielder's time in New York was over.
